Bids for Repair of E. Shell Beach Stairs
John opened the meeting discussing the damage to the E. Shell Beach stairs following a weekend of high winds and surf on March 6 and 7, 2021. As a result of this rough weather, the E. Shell stairs lost so much sand there is a 2-foot drop below the 3 extra stairs added earlier this year. The stair structure is stable but, but the damage is enough to warrant repair to make the stairs easier to use.
John reminded those present the SIA budget approved for this year includes funds to address necessary repairs to the SIA beach stairs. After consulting with the Board, John sought three bids for repair of the E. Shell stairs to address the currently crooked stairs, replace the damaged spindles, add additional bracing and additional stainless-steel screws throughout the stairs as needed. Much of the current stairs are fine and the deck would not be touched.
Review and discussion followed regarding the three bids to repair the E. Shell stairs. There was consensus to accept the bid of $1,800 from TDB Construction Inc. for the repair of the E. Shell beach stairs. This bid proposes reuse of most current materials on these stairs for the repairs. Following a motion to accept the TDB bid, the quorum of Board members present voted unanimously to accept this bid and to proceed with the work as soon as possible. Per the County, a permit is not required to repair exiting beach stairs. John will contact TDB Construction to move forward with the repairs at E. Shell.
County Beach Renourishment Update
A question was raised as to whether the SIA beach area would receive sand as part of the County’s beach renourishment project currently underway north of SIA. Per the information below on the County website, SIA is included in Phase I which began at Seaview and will finish at Wabasso. The renourishment began on January 4, 2021 and is slated to be completed no later than April 30, 2021. Currently, the sand renourishment has reached the main beach stairs access at Orchid, approximately one-half mile north of SIA.
Coastal Engineering Division Beach Renourishment Update SECTOR 3 Phase I of the Sector 3 Beach and Dune Renourishment Project (Seaview Subdivision to Wabasso) commenced January 4, 2021. The County’s contractor, Guettler’ Brothers Construction, LLC has been operating out of Treasure Shores and Golden Sands Beach Park. The current plan is to haul 307,000 cubic yards of beach compatible sand from Stewart Materials in Fort Peirce. Sand will be placed on the dune as well as on the berm, including in the water, resulting in a wider beach. Following sand placement, native dune grasses will be installed along the dune.
Phase II of the Sector 3 Beach and Dune Renourishment Project (Wabasso to Turtle Trail) is anticipated to commence in November 2021 after the County selects a contractor.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully Submitted.
Mary Beasman, SIA Secretary
